Despite all of the challenges facing Spain today they still have a commitment to helping the environment demonstrated by the opening of the world larges Solar Power Station.   With an average 340 sunny days per year, the Spanish government realized long ago the potential for Spain to be a leader in solar renewable energy and have been subsidizing renewable energy projects all over the country.

The La Florida solar plant, located in western Spain, covers almost 658,000 yards and generates 432 Mega Watts of energy, as much energy as a nuclear power station.  Arrays of parabolic mirrors collect reflected sunlight to heat tubes attached to mirrors.   The heated liquid is then used to create steam that runs electricity-generating turbines.  The mirror arrays rotate to follow the path of the sun throughout the day to maximize energy production.

Spain is now the world leader in solar generated electricity output and will continue their commitment.  By 2013 Spain expects to reach 2,500 MW of output.
