Earthstone Recycled Granite Pavers help divert granite waste from landfills

Earthstone Products, a North Carolina-based company, has devised a way to turn discarted stone into beautiful recycled granite pavers.  In addition to being aesthetically pleasing, the recycled granite pavers are also functional and good for the environment.  Many countertop manufactures throw away up to 25% of the slab granite that they cut, and until Earthstone began manufacturing these pavers, that granite sat in landfills.  Now it is going to good use, and Earthstone has even been certified by the state of North Carolina as a "granite recycling center."

According to Earthstone sales and marketing director John Tesh, the process begins when the company obtains granite waste from various other companies and stamps these scraps into block shapes with giant cookie cutter-like tool.  Recycled granite pavers intended for outdoor use are tumbled and installed smooth side down, while those intended for indoor use are installed polished side up.  THe pavers can be either impervious or porous, depending on their base.

Currently Earthston's recycled granite pavers retail for approximately $6/square foof for outdoor pavers and $7 per square foot for indoor pavers, not including installation.  Because it is impratical to ship such a heavy product long distances, the recycled granite pavers are currently mosly avaialble in North Carolina and Virginia, but the company is hoping to expand soon.
